Frequently asked

How do I connect my bank?

Open BetterSelf, tap Connect bank, then choose your bank from the list. You'll be redirected to your bank's own consent flow (this is the Consumer Data Right process — your bank, not us, asks for your login). Once you approve, BetterSelf gets read-only access to your transactions.

What is open banking — and is it safe?

Open banking is the Australian government's framework for letting you share your bank data with apps you trust, without ever giving them your password. We use Basiq, an ACCC-accredited CDR data recipient. Your bank issues a time-limited, read-only token. We can see transactions; we can't move money. You can revoke the connection at any time, from inside the app or from your bank.

How do I set a weekly limit?

In the app, head to Limits and enter the weekly figure you want to cap your gambling spend at. The limit takes effect immediately. If you ever want to increase the limit, that change is queued for 48 hours before it activates — so future-you gets a vote. Lowering the limit happens straight away.

What is the cool-off period and how does it work?

The cool-off period is BetterSelf's built-in pause. When you try to raise a limit, increase access, or reverse a self-restriction, the change is held for 48 hours before taking effect. You can cancel that pending change at any point inside the 48 hours. Decreases — lowering a limit, locking out an account — happen immediately, because safety always moves faster than risk.

Can BetterSelf move my money?

No. Open banking through the CDR is read-only by design. BetterSelf can see your transactions to help you understand your spending. We cannot transfer, withdraw, or initiate payments. Ever. Not even with your permission — the protocol doesn't allow it.

How do I delete my account and all my data?

From inside the app: Settings → Account → Delete account. No forms, no waiting period. Your bank connection is severed, your transaction history is wiped, and your account is permanently removed. If you'd rather email us, send a request to hello@mybetterself.com.au from the address you signed up with.

What happens if a transaction isn't categorised as gambling?

Our classifier is good but not perfect. If you spot a gambling transaction that BetterSelf missed (or a non-gambling transaction it tagged in error), tap the entry and choose Re-categorise. Your correction trains the classifier for your account immediately, and helps the model improve for everyone over time.

Does BetterSelf work with all Australian banks?

BetterSelf works with every Australian bank that participates in the Consumer Data Right framework — which is the big four (CommBank, NAB, ANZ, Westpac) plus more than 150 others including Up, Macquarie, ING, Bankwest, Bendigo, ME Bank, Suncorp and most credit unions. If your bank is CDR-accredited (and most are), you're set.
