How to find your real gambling spend in your bank statement.

Published 29 August 2026 · 7 min read

Ask someone what they spend on gambling a month and you’ll usually get a number ending in a zero, said with confidence, and wrong — almost always low. Not because people lie, but because gambling spend is genuinely hard to see: it’s spread across two or three betting apps, a couple of cards, cash at the pub, and deposits that never come back through the same door they left. This is the 20-minute method for getting the real figure. No judgement anywhere in it — you can’t make a decision about a number you’ve never seen.

Step 1 — pull the right statements

Every Australian bank lets you export a statement as PDF or CSV from the app or web banking — look for Statements or Export transactions in account settings. CSV is easier if you want to sort; PDF is fine for the read-through.

Step 2 — know what operators look like on paper

Some are obvious: SPORTSBET, NEDS, LADBROKES, TAB, BET365, POINTSBET, DABBLE, PICKLEBET show up under their own names. But watch for the quieter ones:

Rule of thumb: if you can’t explain a repeating line item in five seconds, check it. The descriptors that take the longest to explain are usually the ones doing the most damage to the total.

Step 3 — count deposits, then subtract what came back

Two columns. In: every deposit to an operator, every venue-ATM withdrawal you’re being honest about. Back: every withdrawal from an operator to your account. Your real spend is the difference — the net figure. Two things to keep straight:

Step 4 — put the number next to something real

A monthly figure floating on its own is easy to shrug at. The same figure next to something you actually want is not. $460 a month is a return flight every month, most of a car payment, or $5,500 a year toward a bond. Whatever your thing is, write the two numbers side by side. That’s the whole exercise — not to feel bad, but to make the trade visible so it’s actually yours to make.

The 2-minute version: Betterself does this automatically — upload a statement and it’s read on your own device, finds the gambling transactions including the quiet ones, nets off money back, and puts the figure against the goals you choose. Only the transactions you review ever reach us. How it works.

The honest summary

You don’t need an app to do this — a statement export, twenty minutes and two columns will get you the truth. What matters is that the number comes from your bank’s records instead of your memory, because memory is the tool gambling products are designed to beat.

  1. Statement export steps vary by bank — search your bank’s help pages for “export statement CSV”.
